Decent Samples

Geschreven door Bunny (Adriaan Zwemer)
In quite a bit of my music, I make use of David Hilowitz' Decent Sampler sample plugin & some of his samples.
A major part of the percussion of The Last Sunset uses some samples that i recorded by hitting a broken toy fretsaw and a clothes rack (the clothes rack with a wooden hammer) and am playing back with Decent Sampler.
In doing this, however, I came across some shortcomings.
  1. Reverb mix - When you have a convolution reverb, its mix parameter goes from 0 to 1, where 1 is just the convolution and 0 is just the dry signal, whereas the algorithmic reverb's mix parameter maps those values to what on the convolution would be 0 to 0.5.
  2. Release samples (not really a problem for The Last Sunset) - Release samples are always played at full volume, regardless of the volume of the attack sample. This is a problem sometimes. Dealt with in version 1.15.4
  3. Fast rendering - When rendering above normal play speed, DS often craps out, so now i'm forced to bounce at 1x speed. This is not exclusive to DS, i've also had some problems with some Strezov samples in Kontakt. (And of course loading problems with Soundpaint, Vienna Synchron, SINE and the Agus Hardiman Guitars, but that's beside the point)
  4. Text - Some text is scaled when you resize the window, some is not. The text in the <label> and <menu> elements don't scale, but the text in a <labelled-knob> does.
  5. Images - You cannot make them not scale. This combines with not being able to position things relative to the top ui bar, which doesn't scale. Everything is from the top left corner of the window (which makes sense, but it'd be nice to be able to choose).
    1. This used to not be as big a problem in the standalone version, as, there, <image> elements didn't scale for some reason.
  6. Counting - When using bindings, you have to refer to everything by the how manyth element it is in the xml structure, except things that accept tags. And for some reason, some things are taggable and some not. This is a very annoying problem. Dealt with in version 1.21.1/1.21.2!
  7. Scripting - there is none.
  8. Envelopes - There is no hold.

Before releasing any of my ds programmes, i'd want 240 and 127 to be fixed/dealt with. However, if you want to listen to some demos for a sampled can, you can! (or rather a tin, but, yk, the pun)
Here, here and here.
